what’s the point, of beauty?

March 3, 2010

What’s the point of a Rube Goldberg contraption? Children get science-class assignments to build things, learning about different “laws” I suppose. But why should grown-ups invest hours!!! in building such things?
Well, because they are things of beauty.
I love the fern frond in this one.

And this one is just crazy amazing. Love the sounds of the [...]

There’s a New Girl in Town

March 2, 2010

Pinball is in my DNA. My father was a gangsta pinpall player, back in the days when pinball machines paid out cash winnings. He’d cheat, frankly, on top of being an ace player, and he’d travel from one small Montana town to another playing pinball, and getting running out of town now and again.
Later, I [...]

more bang for the buck

December 10, 2009

I guess my husband didn’t appreciate my publication of the link to his love-wanted advertisement; he has deactivated the profile.
I don’t get it. Doesn’t he want more promotion of his quest? You know, stretching the dollar value of his membership and efforts at putting together his little self-promo?
What do you think? Should I publish [...]

when it rains

December 2, 2009

It is not easy times I am living in and I have a core of rage; an awful lot of that is being vented on these pages. But I hope that I have also conveyed my gratitude (and awe) for all the good people and things in my life.
I am on some weird roller coaster, [...]

I went to test drive a Tesla and all I got was this lousy stamp

November 13, 2009

Okay, so I did not really, truly expect to drive a Tesla tonight–although that would have been hot. Plus, it’s not really a lousy stamp, I actually quite like the design.
We begin the evening with the fact that my datebook said things started at 7–which made for me arriving at about 7:30–except the party was [...]

It’s difficult to get things done around here.

June 15, 2009

Can you see why some days I don’t get much done? My home is surrounded by such marvelous bits of nature, and I confess I get sucked up into awe.

Glimpses from the edge. 6.

March 27, 2009

I think I was wrong this morning about the flicker making a racket pecking on something. And I am so happy to be wrong: the Pileated just landed on the suet. The Pileateds haven’t been around for months!! and I’ve missed them.
After scarfing suet, he flew off into the ravine to peck at snags and [...]

Glimpses from the edge. 4.

March 21, 2009

The air was below freezing at 7:30 this morning, and so still. The small birds tweeted now and again, but the herons were generally silent.
I carried my cup of coffee and my little binoculars to the edge of the ravine and peered. A few herons were perched high atop some maples along the west edge, [...]

Glimpses from the edge. 3.

March 17, 2009

This evening I watch the herons landing in the big leaf maple near the house. Their nests are on the other side of the ravine, so I deduce that the ones on this side are either being shoved out of the main colony, or are here to gather sticks for building nests.
I soon see that [...]

Glimpses from the edge. 2.

March 6, 2009

The sun is dusting the treetops again this morning, and it is a mere 30°. The herons are quiet yet busy. Busy swooping momentarily through the treetops, and then perching, gazing. What do they see from there?
