What is it with 50-year-old travel trailers?

April 25, 2011

So I’ve been asking myself, “What is it about vintage travel trailers that so many people find so compelling?”

So often when I talk about my trailer project, people respond as if I am writing a novel or something—like there is all this romance and adventure infused in old aluminum trailers.

Now, I’m not complaining or mocking … I like old aluminum trailers, but I’ve been known to be partial to many things that other people just don’t “appreciate” so I don’t figure that my idea of cool is any kind of vanguard. But after a few comments from folks about “how cool” this is, and after several people tried to buy the trailer (where it’s parked right now by the workshop), I had to realize that lots of other folks are called to these old, aluminum traveling homes .

Which got me to wondering, “what IS it?”

So far the best explanation I have is summed up in this photograph above, taken of the first section of the interior that I’ve gotten polished. I don’t know if I can come up with a word explanation …
