Using my tools and talents for good

July 13, 2010

Today I came up with another idea for making use of some of the vintage things I have saved—pocket notebooks with postcards as covers.

These were pretty fun and easy to make, but of course the right tools made that so. These included:

  • bone folder
  • booklet stapler
  • colored staples
  • fancy die-cutting device for rounding corners (borrowed from Tiberio)
  • Fiskars paper cutter
  • and a horde of vintage postcards

This first batch of six little notebooks I made from “Norge” postcards that I gleaned from Auntie Evelyn’s stash. I think some are from Grandma Vera’s, too. I’ve been toting these postcards around for ten years or so, and now I’ve done something with them. I’ll give these little books as bon voyage gifts to my family members who are leaving for Norway on July 25th for three weeks of visiting relatives and exploring.

The next batch will be from old Bangkok and Hawaii postcards. Cool.

Oooh, what a fantastic idea! I’ve seen friends make books as gifts and projects and for their theses (most of my friends were studio art majors), and it’s always been something I wanted to learn to do. These look gorgeous.
