Rain Garden-ing at Fairwood Library

August 8, 2009

Worked up a healthy princess “glow” today helping to build a rain garden at the Fairwood Library. The Stewardship Partners headed the project and we were along for the education. We’ve been trying to determine just what to do about all the rainwater that pours from our roof and that streams down the two streets that border our home. A rain garden (or two) seems a sensible approach, and as there is only so much that can be learned from reading, we packed up our gloves and shovels and headed south to join the rest of the volunteers in building a “bio infiltration system” on the library lawn.

Learned a lot. Went home and distributed gravel and Groco from the 4 yards of material that had been dumped in our yard in the morning before we left. Had to buy a new wheelbarrow though, as the first one is all worn out from hauling all the concrete sidewalk that has been busted out of our yard, to make room for garden instead.
